Thank you to everyone who participated in this exciting event. So many innovative and creative solutions were submitted and we're excited to share with you the top 3 winning teams.

1st Place

SIT (Simulated Interactive Teaching)

The aim of SIT is to design, develop and evaluate a system that enables students to access education in regions with limited internet connectivity by reducing the reliance on internet. 

2nd Place


ULIO is a highly accessible, gamified and AI-driven language learning platform for migrants using SMS and audio to deliver quality lessons.

A mobile-first Teacher Assistant Platform for developing countries built with the ground realities and scalability in mind.

Case competition

Challenge: Design an innovative technology solution that addresses a problem aligned to achieving accessible and equitable quality education

Equal and equitable access to quality education is one of the greatest challenges facing global society. Socio-economic status, geography, race, gender, and disability all play a role in how and when we learn, and the resulting opportunities education opens. Critically, the COVID-19 pandemic has compounded long-existing challenges and wiped out 20 years of progress.*

Technology can be key to addressing these issues. Regardless of your course of study, by participating in this case competition you can devise innovative solutions that address the challenge of making quality education a right for all – not a privilege. As current students, the world needs your expertise, empathy, and unique perspective to design technological solutions to a global problem.

The competition theme is, "A future of education that ensures accessible and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all," inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 

Your solution should address one of the diverse challenges aligned to this theme and demonstrate how technology can help communities in need around the world. While solution submissions do not need to include working code, you will need to describe the technologies required and how those technologies fit into the solution.

Who should participate

Successful teams require diverse skillsets to design unique solutions. Explore some of the personas that are often successful in case competitions, but remember: there is no one way to build a great team. In order to participate, you must meet all eligibility criteria.





The digital mastermind of your team. The builder is the methodical, digital-obsessed teammate who brings the technical know-how to help ground your solution in what's possible.

Your UX expert who ensures the solution is user-friendly and visually appealing. Designers bring creative vision to technical problem solving, making what you build sleek and easy-to-consume.  

Good communicators make complex ideas simple and easy to digest. Your team's calculating hustler is essential in articulating the problem and succinctly defining how the solution can make a difference in a profound, unique, consumable way.  

Altruistic thinkers who understand the complex problems at hand in a truly human way and are committed to finding a solution to make a demonstrable difference. This inspirational lead of your team must keep in mind the communities in need, while thinking like the individual user.

Judging criteria

Submissions will be judged equally across four primary criteria, which evaluate whether the solution applies technology effectively to solve a real-world problem.

Relevancy and impact

How relevant is the solution to the stated challenge? How effectively does the technical solution address the identified issue within the theme? How helpful or useful would the outcomes be to impacted communities? Can the solution scale over time to have a further reach across multiple user groups or geographies? Can success be measured?

Design and feasibility 

How good is the design, user experience, and ease of use of the solution? Were the identified issue, impacted users, and technology solution thoroughly researched, with the provided data or facts demonstrating the team's understanding of the problem? Is the solution possible, or just nice in theory? 

Innovation and originality 

Is the solution new and disruptive? How unique and innovative is the approach to solving an existing challenge through technology, including one or more IBM solutions? Is the solution differentiated from others already on the market? 

Compelling storytelling 

How well did the submission materials articulate the problem, the target user(s) and their experience, and how the technological solution would address the problem? How relatable and engaging was the solution story?


$37,000 prize pool!

Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) will invite students from the winning team to participate in their year-round program that supports the next generation in developing social impact projects to address pressing societal challenges. Winning team members will also receive an invitation to the CGI U 2022 virtual Annual Meeting hosted by President Bill Clinton and Chelsea Clinton, as well as access to mentoring, skills training, networking, leadership development, and professional growth opportunities provided by CGI U throughout the year.

Each student from the winning team will be invited to apply to IBM job opportunities. IBM will consider each application, and will invite winning team members to interview for roles for which they qualify.

Grand Prize

$20,000 USD

Each student from the Runner-up team will be invited to apply to IBM job opportunities. IBM will consider each application, and will invite those team members to interview for roles for which they qualify.

Runner-up Prize

$10,000 USD

Each student from the 2nd Runner-up team will be invited to apply to IBM job opportunities. IBM will consider each application, and will invite those team members to interview for roles for which they qualify.

You can earn points by taking action on the event platform! Top 10 individual point earners will receive $200 USD.

Individual registration for the case competition closes at midnight

Thursday | November 11 @ 9:00 pm PST

All final presentation videos and projects must be submitted by 9:00 pm PST in order to qualify for the case competition. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Team registration closes - all teams must register their team on the event platform by the project deadline.
